Rhinoplasty, or changing the shape of the nose, is a common surgery performed by plastic surgeons. The bone and cartilage support of the nose can be altered to improve the appearance and function of the nose. Difficulty with breathing can be improved at the same time the reshaping of the nose is addressed. Septoplasty, or opening the airway of the nose, is often performed at the same time as the rhinoplasty.
Usually, nasal surgery is performed in an out-patient surgical facility or hospital operating room under general anesthesia or intravenous sedation with local anesthesia. Patients tolerate the surgery quite well and do not require admission to the hospital. The surgery is relatively easy to undergo but bruising around the eyes or "black eyes" usually occurs. It may take more than two weeks before all of the bruising disappears.
Dr. Gatti has a special interest in nasal surgery and has been performing both cosmetic and reconstructive Rhinoplasty since 1986.
